Community update June 16, 2017

The work continues since the decision to return to our Jewish community building on Amity Road.  Once Svigals + Partners came onboard as the project architect, workshops occurred focusing on three category areas:

  • Yeladim, Café, Public Space & Security
  • Office, Rental, & Program Space
  • Fitness, PE & Spa

In the workshops, key staff members, volunteers and program/facility users had the opportunity to provide insight into strengths and opportunities to enhance the JCC experience.  The architects appreciate the information they received and are incorporating suggestions into their preliminary designs.

Concurrently, an RFP process is underway to select a construction manager.  Ten firms toured the building and nine have submitted proposals.  We expect to select a construction manager within the next week or so.

Simultaneously, efforts are well underway to open portions of the building least affected by the fire for use this summer.  The indoor Marcia & Stanley F. Reiter pool and racquetball areas, including the beloved Playscape for young children, will be open as of June 26th.  A new pathway along the outskirts of the building from the side parking lot to the pool area is under construction for accessibility.  JCC Day Camps also open on the 26th and will be using portions of the building for rainy and excessively hot days.  New walls are in place to prevent members and guests from accessing unsafe portions of the building.

It is important for our community to know that the Jewish Federation Board approved the project with the understanding that costs may not exceed the insurance settlement proceeds.  There are many wonderful ideas that could enhance programming and services in our community building. We will pursue important priorities and other ideas that are possible within financial constraints.  Svigals + Partners will develop additional concepts for consideration and discussion.

Over the past two weeks, we held two fantastic events on the grounds of the Jewish community campus, Touch-a-Truck and Grill n' Chill.  There was an electric enthusiasm palpable at both well attended events.  It was often heard, “It’s great to be home” or “I’m so glad to be back”.  While the return to full operations will happen over time, it is wonderful to know that our JCC is treasured and that our community shares our excitement to return home.
